As a sustainable home care brand, we believe that small, conscious choices can lead to a cleaner and healthier lifestyle, not just for ourselves but for the planet as well. In this blog post, we'll share three practical tips for you to kick off 2024 on a cleaner and more sustainable note.
1. Reuse, Repurpose and Refill Instead of Buying New
Swap out conventional, single-use plastic cleaning products for eco-friendly alternatives. Look for brands that prioritize sustainable sourcing, minimal packaging, and non-toxic ingredients. Our highly concentrated formulas and reusable aluminum vessels are a great example of this, designed to keep your living space spotless, and tread lighter on the planet.
Beyond cleaning products, this applies to tons of other spaces in our lives, from repairing rather than discarding, finding creative ways to reuse 'finished' items and using reusable water bottles, shopping bags, buying vintage/second-hand, etc.
Being mindful of our consumption and waste can significantly contribute to a cleaner environment.
2. Buy Less, But Better
Before making a purchase, ask yourself if you will really use/enjoy it. Try to avoid the allure of a sale, when you don't really need the product.
Think about investing in some key pieces, whether wardrobe staples, kitchen appliances/accessories, footwear, etc -- that are known to stand the test of time instead of saving a little bit on items that will wind up in the landfill before the end of the year.
3. Don't Fall For Greenwashing
This is a tricky one, because greenwashing has never been stronger, and the use of unregulated terms like, 'natural' and 'green' and 'eco-friendly' make it even harder to discern what is actually good from an ingredient, materials and supply chain standpoint.
Certifications are a good way to understand if the brand can back up its claims, but they are expensive, which make them difficult for new/young brands (Guests on Earth included) to invest in. We received our B Corp Certification in the middle of 2023, which was a rigorous process, but one that we feel strongly about in terms of highlighting our high social, material and environmental standards.
As much as you can, support brands that prioritize ethical and eco-friendly practices. Opt for quality over quantity and choose products that have a longer lifespan, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
What other practices are would you add to this list?
